A misbehaving VELUX blind is usually a small mechanical problem or an economics problem — either a tension/clip fix that costs nothing, or a blind whose repair costs more than the £30 compatible replacement. Here’s the triage.

First: warranty and identity

Two checks before touching anything. Age: blinds and shutters carry a 3-year VELUX guarantee — a young blind that’s failed (rather than been yanked) is a claim, not a repair. Identity: everything — spares, manuals, replacements — keys off the window’s size code on the data plate behind the sash (e.g. GGL MK06; decode yours here) plus the blind type on the blind’s own rail (DKL blackout, RFL roller, FHL pleated and so on).

The common failures, triaged

Won’t stay put / creeps up or down (roller & blackout). Almost always spring tension or side-rail engagement, not death. VELUX publishes model-specific adjustment guides — search their support pages for your blind type — and the fix is typically minutes with no parts. Check too that the side rails haven’t worked loose from the frame (they press and screw on; loose rails let the blind wander).

Frayed or snapped cords (pleated & duo). Cord kits exist for many models and the re-threading is fiddly but documented. Honest economics: on a basic pleated blind, an hour of cord surgery competes badly with a compatible replacement from ~£30. On a duo or a large blind, the kit wins.

Fabric sagging, marked or sun-bleached. Not repairable in any sensible way — replace the blind. This is the moment to read the genuine-vs-compatible comparison: bedrooms and long-term rooms may justify genuine; everywhere else rarely does.

Clips, brackets and end caps. The pre-fitted brackets on the window frame rarely fail, but the blind-side fittings crack with age. Spare clips and brackets are cheap; match them to the blind type, not just the window code.

Electric or solar blind dead. Work the checklist in order: control battery → re-pair the remote/wall pad → (solar) check the cell isn’t shaded or filthy and let it charge in direct light → then suspect the blind’s battery pack or motor. Packs and motors are replaceable parts on INTEGRA-family products — the same logic as the windows themselves — and far cheaper than a new powered blind. Electrical components on VELUX products carry 5 years’ guarantee (10 if registered), which may still cover you.

Exterior awnings and shutters. Weather-exposed and worth repairing — genuine parts only, and if it’s the motor on a heat-control shutter, that’s a warranty-claim-first situation given the prices.

Repair vs replace: the honest maths

SituationCall
Manual blackout/roller, tension or clip issueFix — free, minutes

Duo, Venetian or large blind, single failed partRepair with the parts kit
Solar/electric blind, motor or batteryRepair (check 5-year electrics guarantee first)

Two closing notes. Blind failures cluster on the oldest windows — if the window’s gaskets and glazing are also tired, put the money there first; a new blind on a draughty window is lipstick. And when replacing rather than repairing, you’re not obliged to match what was there: an upgrade to blackout in a bedroom, or a solar blind on an unreachable window, costs little more than like-for-like.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair a VELUX blind that won't stay down?

Usually, yes — on roller and blackout blinds it's almost always spring tension or worn side-rail engagement rather than a broken blind. VELUX publishes model-specific adjustment guides; find your blind's model on the window's data plate area and follow the matching guide before buying anything.

How do I find my VELUX blind model for spares?

Blinds are matched to the window's size code — open the window and read the data plate (e.g. GGL MK06). Genuine spares and replacement blinds are sold by that code; the blind type (DKL, RFL etc.) is printed on the blind's own rail or packaging.

Is it worth repairing a VELUX blind?

For genuine electric/solar blinds and exterior awnings, yes — parts are much cheaper than the unit. For a basic manual blackout blind, often not: compatible replacements start around £30, which undercuts most spare-part-plus-time repairs.

How long is the guarantee on VELUX blinds?

3 years on blinds and shutters. If yours is younger than that and faulty rather than damaged, claim before you repair.
